Time to have some fun - Blogger style...

Monday, I am "heading out to San Francisco" (reminds me of a great Jimmy Buffet song!) to join a bunch of bloggers, mainly from the RE.net community.
Inman’s Real Estate Connect is July 23rd - 25th and is preceded by RE Bar Camp on the 22nd. Day one of Inman Connect has a nearly six hour workshop titled “Blogger’s Connect.” There, I will meet up with some really great people, many are new friends, some are people that I am looking forward to meeting for the first time. Mainly, I am going on this trip to learn more about how to take our blog to new audiences and to reach more people. Once RailLife.com is ready to launch, (coming soon) we really want to be able to bring good quality information to you concerning ALL aspects of these changing areas along the Phoenix, Tempe and Mesa light rail line. One of the panelists is Jeff Turner from Real Estate Shows, Jeff was recently in Tempe and did this impromptu interview with me while we had lunch. (just a quick overview of RailLife.com) I am looking forward to meeting with him again in CA. The guy is a social media maniac! :-)
RE Bar Camp runs from 10am to 6pm the day before Inman Connect and will be kind of a “free for all” of ideas. Basically, you put a bunch of brainy geeks in a room, start throwing ideas and topics around and break out into groups to talk about whatever floats your boat. There will be live feeds coming from twitter, flickr, blog sites and more social media apps than you can shake a stick at. Make sure to tune into the Bar Camp feed or to the SF Connectism site if you would like to get the scoop. This will allow you to follow along with live updates and random thoughts.
Of course, it isn’t going to be all work and no play… Several gatherings and parties are planned for the week. Tuesday evening, we will “have” to attend the “Beer With Bloggers” sponsored by my new buddy David Gibbons and Zillow followed the next night by our friend Rudy Bachraty and Trulia throwing the “Day After House Party.” I was fortunate to meet both of these guys a few months ago in Phoenix and they are a lot of fun. Wednesday night, after the "house party," I am off to meet with my friend Brad Andersohn and his crew throwing a party in the Bolero Penthouse suite in Union Square. There, I hope to get more information on how to bring our readers more information about the communities that will surround the upcoming light rail stops. We will be adding some really cool new tools to the blog and to the main site very soon and we think it will be a great resource for the communities. Our goal is to be a complete resource for these communities featuring detailed information on housing, restaurants, shopping, hotels, sporting activities, entertainment, light rail schedules and maps etc. etc.! All wrapped up in a fun, interactive site for you to enjoy... I have begun sharing some of the pages from the new site with a few "focus groups" to try and get feedback on what we are doing. So far, so good. We really hope you will come back often and watch for the new features! :-)

More Phoenix Light Rail news

I found this interesting article today talking about how cities are embracing public transportation more than ever.

"The American Public Transportation Association reports that Americans took 2.6 billion trips on public transportation in the first three months of 2008 — nearly 85 million more trips than last year for the same time period. In total, 10.3 billion trips were taken on public transportation last year — the highest number in more than 50 years. By far the biggest increase was in the number of trips on light rail, which saw more than a 10 percent jump in ridership."

The article has a pretty large focus on the new Phoenix Light Rail system and of the development along the line. They talk about some of the new light rail lines in other cities as well. For some of you, it will be an interesting read. For others, it might bore you to death. :-)

Leaping in to Light Rail is the name of the article... Their blog post is here as well... Feel free to let us know what you think!

Metro Light Rail - A Few New Rules

For many Arizona residents, light rail is going to be a new experience. Metro has begun a pretty significant safety campaign and is looking for Phoenix, Tempe and Mesa to help spread the word. Other than safety and common sense, there will be some new rules and expectations that people will be asked to follow. I snapped this pic near the 1st Ave / Jefferson Street stop today in Phoenix and noted a few of the items. I believe the following rules apply to all light rail stops. This is NOT a complete list and some are paraphrased or approximate so if you want the entire scoop, feel free to go read the sign. :-)

1. Ticketed Passengers Only.

2. Stay back from the platforms edge until train comes to a complete stop.

3. No Smoking.

4. No Food or Drink.

5. No Roller blading, Skateboarding or Loitering.

Here are a few links to statutes that may apply...

Don't be a pig... aka... don't litter or pollute.

Don't be an idiot and hang out on the tracks...  aka... criminal trespass. (class 3 misdemeanor)

Keep your Butt out of my face... aka... No Smoking.

Busy week for Metro - video recap..

Wow.. This past week was action packed for Metro and for people wanting more information about the new light rail cars. Yesterday, the trains made their first trip up Central Avenue. We were lucky to have Joy get some video of this historic trip. I think the video does a great job in giving you a feel for some of the excitement in Phoenix. Joy has been tremendous help and support at Rail Life since the begining.. Thanks Joy!

On the 4th of July, thousands of people that were near the 3rd St / Mill Avenue stop in Tempe got to see the cars up close! While parked at the station, Metro employees provided information to many curious passers by. I was glad to see the excitement building for the December launch. I was also impressed with how well the a/c system worked on the train, even after being parked for several hours. This video was shot as I walked up to the train from Mill Avenue. I wanted to show a quick glimpse of the people actually boarding and leaving the trains. Notice how easy they are to access etc.. Once inside, I got to see a man ask a few questions of the employees who were all very helpful.  Towards the end of the video, Metro's Hillary Foose talks about security, safety and fare enforcement. As always, she does a great job explaining the system.
Also, don't forget to join Metro for a party on Saturday (the 12th) at the southeastern corner of 19th Avenue and Camelback from 10 am to 1 pm. (the party will be in the park-and-ride lot)

Adding more Life to Rail Life

As we patiently wait for the Rail Life site to be up, we want to start a few new things with the blog and I bet some of you can help.. I am thinking about weekly or bi-weekly stories, maybe even video interviews, with people that live, work, study and or play along the upcoming light rail line. You know, tell us about you, your business, your work, your obsession with the Suns, Diamondbacks or the Devils. What is your favorite restaurant near the line? Where are the coolest spots that will be close to a light rail stop? As a business owner, how do you think the light rail will change things? etc. etc..

In our short time here, we feel fortunate to have met several business owners, employees, students etc. and would like to share some of your thoughts with our readers. We want more people to really "get" what we are all about. RailLife.com is about a new way of life in the valley. We are still kind of kicking around the format and deciding if this would be a good weekend thing or what.?.? Feel free to chime in..
