Parking and Transit info for incoming ASU students

Here is a link to the ASU Parking and Transit Services newsletter for August. This is a really busy week for incoming students! The newsletter has info on Zipcar, the Orbit shuttle service, parking permits, ASU light rail information, inter campus shuttles etc etc. Take a second to check it out...

At Rail Life, we want to welcome all of the incoming ASU students. We look forward to being your resource for Decembers opening of light rail. At ASU, you will soon be able to say... "Your Life Is On The Line!"

Also, here is a copy of an email that went out at ASU today that might be helpful...

"This Wednesday through Friday, thousands of new students will move into residence halls across all four ASU campuses, causing a heavy volume of traffic on the roads and in parking lots. Many of these students and their families have never been on campus before and are unfamiliar with the parking regulations.  Please be aware that most parking areas will see an influx in pedestrian and vehicular traffic as residence hall students unload their belongings. As a warm welcome gesture to our newest ASU community members, and to ensure a safe environment, we are asking drivers to please exhibit increased patience when traveling on campus streets and within parking lots.  ASU parking permit holders who arrive at their assigned parking lot to find that there is no available parking due to students unloading, are asked to please proceed to the nearest ASU permit lot or structure.  Lots and Parking Structures with availability will include:  Packard Drive South (PS-7), Stadium (PS-5), and Lots 59, 59N.  Please display your permit, even if you are parked outside your regularly assigned parking location. Under no condition will parking be allowed along red curbs or in ASU service vehicle stalls.  Reserved spaces and loading zones will be enforced, and parking at meters and in visitor lots will require payment. Please call PTS Dispatch at 480.965.0641 if you have any questions.

We appreciate your cooperation and understanding during this time of increased activity on campus."

An ASU StAR, Social Networking & Light Rail

A while back, I mentioned that I wanted to add "more life to Rail Life" by involving people from the community and hearing about life and experiences along the light rail line. Slowly, we are getting around to some of my ideas. :-)

This past weekend, I had an opportunity to speak with Sam Richard. I first met Sam several months ago after coming across his "Deserted After Dark" blog. As a member of the "Student Ambassadors for Recruitment" (StAR program) at ASU, (Phoenix Campus) Sam has some really great insight on the Downtown Phoenix Campus and student life. In the following video, some of the things we discuss are: 1.The student experience in Phoenix. 2. Will Light Rail benefit ASU students and the community. 3. Recruiting, communicating and social networking with ASU students.

The video was shot at the new "Taylor Place" dorms in downtown Phoenix while many students were moving into their new homes. Taylor place is located a short distance from the (south bound) Van Buren/1st Ave light rail station which will take students to the Tempe campus. Student's have a pass to ride light rail included as part of their tuition.

I really enjoyed shooting this video and want to sincerely thank Sam once again for taking the time to meet with me. At Rail Life, we are really looking forward to more of these videos and to meeting people who are living, working or playing along the upcoming light rail line in Phoenix, Tempe and Mesa.

Rail Life "Flickr Pic" of the week

Rail Life has a "Phoenix Light Rail Group on Flickr." Basically, we want to share some of our pictures from the community and to allow people to add their pics as well. These can be light rail related but we also want a favorite spot, restaurant, sports team, community etc.

On Sunday morning, we choose a "pic of the week" and share it with everyone. Each week, new pictures will be added to the group and I will pick a favorite to post on the blog along with a brief description. If you add something to the group prior to Saturday afternoon, your picture will be eligible.

The pic for this week shows the new "Taylor Place" at ASU. This is an exciting new place for ASU students. I got to take a tour of Taylor Place yesterday (more on that SOON!) and was really impressed. Downtown is changing like crazy! There was a good article today in the paper (yep, Jahna Berry mentioned the light rail line) titled "At last, ASU Downtown takes shape." Take a look.

I have a few pics of Taylor Place here as well...

Rail Life "Flickr pic" of the week

Recently, I wrote a post about Flickr where Rail Life announced the "Phoenix Light Rail Group on Flickr." Basically, we wanted to share some of our pictures from the community and to allow people to add their pics as well. Thanks to the people that have joined the group!

As a new Sunday morning ritual, I have decided to take a "pic of the week" and share it with everyone. Each week, new pictures will be added to the group and I will pick a favorite to post on the blog along with a brief description. If you enter a pic prior to Saturday afternoon, your pics will be eligible.

Since the Centerpoint Condominiums have been in the news quite a bit lately, I chose this pic that I took from Centerpoint looking over to the ASU football stadium. I am really looking forward to watching the Devil's this year so I thought that was another reason to include this shot. In fact, the football season will be the last season before the opening of our light rail system. Next year, people can use the trains to get to the games which might help with some of the traffic and parking nightmares we are use to. It will also be a great way for the students living at the Phoenix campus to get to the games. I am pretty sure they will be glad they don't have to drive. :-)
